Class A Girls

4x800 Meter Relay
Doddridge's Clara Grandt opened the meet with a 2:25.7 leg to put Doddridge into first place, and no one was ever able to take it from them. Jennie Spencer took the baton with a lead of several seconds and built a sizable cushion on her first lap. Though she struggled down the stretch, Doddridge was never threatened. Wheeling Central used a strong finish by Bethany Sloane to pass Charleston Catholic for 2nd. Each of the top 3 teams ran under 10:11. Williamstown held off Greenbrier West for 4th. Cameron squeezed in under 11:00 minutes in taking 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 6 of 6.

Williamstown's Laura Ankrom picked the right time to have her first 100' throw of the season. Her 103'8 scored her a 4th. Doddridge's Amanda Kenny-Napolitani and Kayla Todd finished in 5th and 6th with throws over 103'.
RunWV's Current Score: 16 of 18.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Two of the predicted placers were disqualified, opening things up a bit. As expected, Wheeling Central took the top spot, winning by over a second. Williamstown also performed admirably and finished 2nd. Madonna wasn't far off Williamstown's time in taking 3rd. Buffalo owned the 4th best time. East Hardy topped Doddridge for 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 20 of 24.

Long Jump
The top 6 girls exceeded 15' and were separated by less than 7". Gilmer's Camai Roberson led the pack with a leap of 15'9.25. Midland Trail's Amanda Horrocks, who had won the event the two prior years, finished 2nd. Gilmer's Erica Williams grabbed 3rd place, just 1/2" behind Horrocks. The St. Marys pair of Brooke Wilson and Kelsey Oldfield claimed 4th and 5th. South Harrison's Marissa Haddix rounded out the scoring.
RunWV's Current Score: 25 of 30.

3200 Meter Run
This event was never in doubt. Within a lap, Doddridge's Clara Grandt had established a 4 second lead. After two laps, it was up to 10 seconds, and it kept growing. In the end, Grandt had clocked an 11:27.78, winning by over 47 seconds. Cameron's Hannah Robinson hung back for 3 laps before asserting herself. She ran almost perfectly even mile splits in running her 12:15. Mount Hope's Amanda Blankenship topped her season best by nearly 30 seconds in climbing into 3rd. Wheeling Central's Kallen Weaver held on for fourth, followed by Doddridge's Carrie Zickefoose. Wheeling Central's Ashley Wolfe scored the final point in the event.
RunWV's Current Score: 30 of 36.

High Jump
Five girls managed to leap over 5'0, but only one could clear the bar at 5'2. She was Doddridge's Niki Zickefoose who won the title for the second consecutive season. Doddridge's Jennie Spencer and Midland Trail's Amanda Horrocks had cleared 5'0 with no misses in the competition and thus tied for 2nd. Gilmer's Camai Roberson took 4th and Valley Fayette's Nikki Costa 5th with their 5'0 jumps. Bishop Donahue's Misty Tweedlie took 6th on tie breakers to round out the scoring.
RunWV's Current Score: 34 of 42.

Fayetteville's Jasmine Cotton matched her first place finish of a year ago but did not go under 60 seconds as she did last year. Gilmer's Erica Williams was just under a second behind. The Charleston Catholic pair of Tina Noronha and Katie Kern claimed 3rd and 4th easily. Wheeling Central's Lauren Bauer finished in 5th, and Greenbrier West's Megan Bryant grabbed 6th place out of the first heat by a mere 0.01.
RunWV's Current Score: 38 of 48.

1600 Meter Run
Just as in the 3200, Doddridge's Clara Grandt ran away from the field. At the end of two laps, she had established over a 7 second lead. At the end of three laps, it had stretched to 17. In the end she won the event by just over 20 seconds over teammate Carrie Zickefoose. Zickefoose made her move late in the 3rd lap and throughout the 4th lap and established just enough of a gap to hold off the late kicks of Cameron's Hannah Robinson and Mount Hope's Amanda Blankenship. Charleston Catholic's Sally Mohler finished just behind Blankenship in 5th, and Wheeling Central's Bethany Sloane completed the scoring. Positions 3 through 8 were decided by less than 2 seconds.
RunWV's Current Score: 42 of 54.

300 Meter Low Hurdles
Charleston Catholic's Katie Kern came off the 400 but was not hindered in the least as won the event by over a second. Doddridge's Chantel Simmons was the only other vaulter to clear 8'0. Doddridge's Jordan Coffman beat Williamstown's Kayla Thompson on misses as they both cleared 7'6. That gave Williamstown and Doddridge each 3 of the 6 placers.
RunWV's Current Score: 53 of 66.

100 Meter High Hurdles
Wheeling Central's Bethany Kerwood easily won the event after her primary competition, teammate Kristin Strawn fell during the trials. South Harrison Freshman Marissa Haddix proved that her Gazette Relays performance was no fluke as she took 2nd, just 0.01 ahead of Paden City's Jesse Natali, who continued her strong meet. Tygarts Valley's Carolyn Shiflet edged St. Marys' Traci Bailey by 0.01 for 4th. Buffalo's Lindsay Elkins took the final spot.
RunWV's Current Score: 58 of 72.

100 Meter Dash
Gilmer's Camai Roberson won her 2nd event of the weekend when she slipped past Fayetteville's Jasmine Cotton just before the finish line. Clay-Battelle Freshman Shalanda Hall was close on their heels for 3rd. Gilmer's Erica Williams took 4th. Charleston Catholic's Madeline Brumfield grabbed the 5th spot, and Madonna's Leah Comis claimed the 6th position.
RunWV's Current Score: 63 of 78.

4x200 Meter Relay
The 4x200 proved to be a much stronger event than last year. Last year, only two teams ran under 1:55, this year, the top 6 did it. Wheeling Central ran away from the field winning by nearly two seconds over Charleston Catholic. Paden City grabbed 3rd. Doddridge squeezed in ahead of Madonna for 4th. Greenbrier West smashed the field in the first heat and was fast enough for 6th overall.
RunWV's Current Score: 68 of 84.

4x100 Meter Relay
Just as in the 4x200, Wheeling Central blew away the field. Madonna was in 2nd over 1.3 seconds behind. Doddridge nipped Valley Fayette at the line by 0.03 for 3rd. Charleston Catholic took 5th, and Moorefield came in 6th.

Doddridge's Clara Grandt held off Paden City's Loralee Hillyard. Wheeling Central's Lauren Bauer edged Charleston Catholic's Katie Pollard for 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 78 of 96.

200 Meter Dash
A very tight finish saw Gilmer's Camai Roberson got past teammate Erica Williams and Clay-Battelle's Shalanda Hall for the win. Fayetteville's Jasmine Cotton, despite cruising the 800, faded to 4th at the finish. Charleston Catholic's Katie Kern scored a 5th, just ahead of Jennifer Bowers of Paden City.
RunWV's Current Score: 83 of 102.

4x400 Meter Relay
Doddridge battled with Wheeling Central for nearly the entire race. On the final leg, Wheeling Central's Bethany Sloane got the baton just ahead of Doddridge's Niki Zickefoose. Zickefoose immediately got on the shoulder of Sloane. The two ran in that position until there was roughly 150 meters to go, when Zickefoose made her move. Zickefoose had made passes in the 4x100 and 4x200 to move the Bulldogs up places in the standing, and the 4x400 would be no different. Zickefoose powered down the stretch to a 1:01.8 anchor leg, giving Doddridge the victory by just over a second. Wheeling Central easily held onto 2nd. Paden City was solidly 3rd, well ahead of 4th place Charleston Catholic. Williamstown finished just ahead of Moorefield for 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 88 of 108.

The final score of 88 of 108 means that 81.5 % of the people picked to place did indeed place. Congratulations to those that proved us wrong.

Paden City +10

Class A Boys

4x800 Meter Relay
No team had gone under 8:40 this season, meaning that if anyone was capable of loading a 4x800 that hadn't already would have a shot at winning. Charleston Catholic took the early lead, but was eventually reeled in by Wheeling Central. Wheeling Central used a strong anchor leg from Bobby Herron to put the race away, going on to win by nearly 6 seconds. Charleston Catholic held on to 2nd. Doddridge passed East Hardy and St. Marys just before the finish line for 3rd. East Hardy held 4th and St. Marys 5th. Williamstown brough home 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 6 of 6.

Discus
The furthest Class A throw of the season had been 145'6. That was far exceeded when St. Marys' Josh Burns hurled a toss of 157'11, winning by nearly 17'. In the process, he established a tie for the 8th Best Class A-AA State Meet Throw of All Time. Mount Hope's Tyrone Powell was the only other thrower over 140'. Buffalo's Patrick Hart outdistanced East Hardy's Jeffrey Wilkins by a foot for 3rd. The Doddridge pair of Tim Williams and Greg Reed claimed 5th and 6th, respectively.
RunWV's Current Score: 10 of 12.

Long Jump
Greenbrier West's Bryan Spitzer had been the only Class A jumper to exceed 20' during the season, and he was the only one to do it at the State Meet. Gilmer's Jacob Lilly was less than 4" behind in 2nd. Tucker's Cory Gsell and Wheeling Central's Josh McKee exceeded 19' in taking 3rd and 4th, respectively. Josh Smith of Pocahontas edged out Tucker's Adam Young for 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 13 of 18.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Williamstown dashed to an easy victory, winning by over a second. Valley Fayette was an easy 2nd, over a second ahead of the next team. Doddridge was solidly 3rd, over a second faster than 4th place St. Marys. St. Mary's just nipped Greenbrier West for 5th. Wheeling Central rounded out the placers.
RunWV's Current Score: 19 of 24.

High Jump
Only a single jumper, Bishop Donahue's Matt Beiter had cleared higher than 6'0 during the season, and he was the only one to do it during the meet. His jump of 6'2 was 4" higher than the next best jump. A pair of jumpers cleared 5'10. Williamstown's John Wilson took 2nd over Midland Trail's Jeff Petitt on misses. Pocahontas' Joe Mosesso was the only other jumper over 5'8. There was a three-way tie for 5th between Williamstown's Ross Elder, Valley Fayette's John Crider, and Pocahontas' Josh Smith at 5'6.
RunWV's Current Score: 22 of 30.

3200 Meter Run
After a 90 minute weather delay, the meet finally resumed with the Class A Boys 3200. There were really only three people who realistically could win the event. So, why they blasted through the first lap in 64 is beyond me. But blast through they did, and they dragged pretty much the entire field through the first lap too fast. By the end of three laps, it was pretty clear that the expected three would be the top finishers as they already had an 11 second lead on the 4th and 5th placer runners. The slight lead that Pocahontas' Nathan Rittenhouse and Wheeling Central's Bobby Herron had on Wheeling Central's Tyler Morando started to grow, and it was a two man race. On the last lap, Herron put on a surge that Rittenhouse couldn't match, and Herron took the 8 second victory. Rittenhouse held 2nd by 10 seconds. The race for 4th tightened considerably on the last lap St. Marys' Jesse Templeton and Charleston Catholic's Jamie Sheridan had been running alone most of the race, but Williamstown's Corey Brown and Doddridge's David Orejuela nearly reeled them in. Templeton surged ahead of Sheridan down the stretch to finish in 10:35. Sheridan came across in 10:36. Orejuela used one last surge to squeeze past Brown, both crossing in 10:37.
RunWV's Current Score: 27 of 36.

400 Meter Dash
Williamstown's Ryan Jobes defended his title, taking the 0.75 victory over Meadow Bridge's Chris Neely. East Hardy's Jeremy Rudolph ran strong in 3rd. The top 3 were each under 51.6. Valley Fayette's Derek Banks held off Doddridge's Wayne Ritter for 4th. Wheeling Central's Nathan Tucker rounded out the scoring.
RunWV's Current Score: 32 of 42.

1600 Meter Run
As in the 3200, the early pace was blistering. Wheeling Central's Bobby Herron dashed through the first lap in 60 seconds, with Williamstown's Ryan Jobes right on his heels. Pocahontas' Nathan Rittenhouse and came through in 63. After two laps, Herron, coming through in 2:07, had expanded his lead over Jobes to 3 seconds. Rittenhouse was holding 3rd, with Wheeling Central's Tyler Morando and Tucker's Ian Beckner only two seconds back. By the end of the 3rd lap Jobes had caught Herron. Beckner had pulled up near Rittenhouse, just ahead of Morando. On the final lap, Jobes easily outdistanced Herron, taking nearly a 5 second victory, 4:30.43 to 4:35.27. Rittenhouse held on to 3rd by just over a second over a kicking Morando. Beckner held easily on to 5th. Wheeling Central's Sean Droginske held off a challenge by Doddridge's Jason Oldaker for the final spot.
RunWV's Current Score: 36 of 48.

300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
Wheeling Central's Eric Novick defended his title, taking the event by nearly a second and going under 40 seconds. RunWV's Current Score: 66 of 84.

800 Meter Run
In an event that proved to be much stronger than last year, Williamstown's Ryan Jobes took the win by 1.7 seconds, just missing going under 2:00. Throughout the season, only Jobes had been under 2:04. In this race, three others joined him. Charleston Catholic's John Matherly clocked a 2:01.80, just a half-second ahead of Wheeling Central's Bobby Herron. Cameron's Ryan Howard improved on last year's 6th place finish by claiming 4th in 2:03.39. East Hardy's Jeremy Rudolph came in under 2:05 in taking 5th. Wheeling Central controlled 5th, while Doddridge completed the scoring for the meet. RunWV's Final Score: 86 of 108.
